October 11th is National Coming Out Day!
First Light Midwifery recognizes that coming out is not always possible or safe for all people in all settings. And, that coming out is not a one-time event but rather something that happens constantly for members of our community due to assumptions about our identities. We trust members of the LGBTQ+ community to know what is best for them in their lives and honour their decisions about whether, when and how to come out. However, we want you to know that our midwives are supportive of all identities and family structures and, if you want to, you can come out to us!
From our Welcome Handout:
"Our midwives are committed to anti-racism and reconciliation and, creating a safe space for members of Indigenous communities, People of Colour and the LGBTQIAP2S+ community. We welcome feedback about ways to improve our care and honour our commitment. For the safety of our midwives and clients, we reserve the right to terminate your care immediately should you engage in racist, anti-Indigenous or anti-LGBTQ behaviours and/or comments and be unwilling to engage in dialogue to address your actions."
