Pregnancy & Infant Loss Awareness Day

October 15th is Pregnancy & Infant Loss Awareness Day. Each year thousands of families across Canada mourn the death of their babies.

"In 2017, 1,699 infants died within the first year after birth and 3,159 babies were stillborn. Parents get isolated in their grief and the stigma around the death of children prevents society from speaking about the devastating effects on parents and their families."

Check out http://www.october15.ca/ for how to support families or how to find support yourself, if you have experienced miscarriage, stillbirth or the death of your infant.

As midwives our role is to support our clients on their pregnancy journeys, regardless of what challenges they face or what difficult decisions they must make. Some of our clients experience pregnancy loss, stillbirth and the death of an infant and we are there to listen and support them as they navigate this heartbreak. We also have friends and fellow midwives who have navigated these experiences and we hold them in our hearts.

This is an excerpt from why the name First Light was chosen for our practice:

"As dawn breaks, it can be a time of reflection and, as the world wakes to a new day, it may bring joys as well as challenges into our lives. It captures the first time a child sees the brightness of sunlight outside the womb or the first glimmers of hope that may light our way after loss or a difficult experience."

Today our midwives are lighting candles for:

And, all the little ones who didn't get a chance to be named. For all the families who have had to say goodbye too soon or before getting to say hello, we are holding you in our thoughts today.
